A special snap SMS Morgan Poll this week shows a clear majority of Australian households (85%) have now completed the 2016 Census despite problems with the Census website on the designated Census date – Tuesday August 9, 2016. This special SMS Morgan Poll was conducted over the last two days (Wednesday & Thursday) with a cross-section of 5,580 Australians aged 18+.
Analysis by Voting Preference
Analysing by voting preference shows large majorities of supporters of all parties say they have completed the 2016 Census:
- L-NP voters: Yes (87%) cf. no (13%);
- ALP voters: Yes (85%) cf. no (15%);
- Greens voters: Yes (77%) cf. no (23%);
- Independent/ Others voters: Yes (82%) cf. no (18%);
- Can’t say: Yes (84%) cf. no (16%).
Analysis by Gender
Analysis by gender shows a slight gender split with women more likely than men to say their household has completed the 2016 Census:
- Women: Yes (87%) cf. no (13%);
- Men: Yes (83%) cf. no (17%).
Analysis by Age
Analysing by age shows Census completion increases by age, although all are in large majorities as completing the 2016 Census:
- 18-24yr olds: Yes (78%) cf. no (22%);
- 25-34yr olds: Yes (80%) cf. no (20%);
- 35-49yr olds: Yes (83%) cf. no (17%);
- 50-64yr olds: Yes (88%) cf. no (12%);
- 65+yr olds: Yes (94%) cf. no (6%).
Analysis by State
Analysing by State shows South Australians (90%) are the keenest to complete their Census on time although completion rates are above 80% in all States and Territories.
- New South Wales: Yes (84%) cf. no (16%);
- Victoria: Yes (84%) cf. no (16%);
- Queensland: Yes (86%) cf. no (14%);
- Western Australia: Yes (86%) cf. no (14%);
- South Australia: Yes (90%) cf. no (10%);
- Tasmania: Yes (80%) cf. no (20%).
Michele Levine, Chief Executive Officer, Roy Morgan Research, says:
“An overwhelming majority of Australian households (85%) have completed the 2016 Census despite significant problems with the Census website on the designated Census night – Tuesday August 9, 2016.
“Clear majorities of all age groups, both genders and in every State have managed to complete the Census in the just over two weeks since the designated Census night. The remaining 15% of Australian households have another four weeks, until Friday September 23, to complete the online Census forms or face potential fines of up to $180 per day from that point on for non-completion of the Census.”

Of all Australians surveyed on August 24-25, 2016 85% of households had completed the 2016 Census whereas only 15% had not.
