WA: Western Australian Voting Virtually Unchanged - Election Would Still Be Too Close to Call

Finding No. 3612 - April 03, 2003

In January – February primary support for the ALP was unchanged at 41% while L-NP support was down 1% to 41%. On a two-party preferred basis, support for both the ALP and the L-NP were unchanged at 50%. If a Western Australian State election had been held in January - February it would have been too close to call, the latest Morgan Poll finds.

Among the minor parties, support for the Greens was 8.5%, the Australian Democrats 2.5%, One Nation 2% and Other Parties and Independent Candidates 5%.

During this polling period:

  • Plans were unveiled to deregulate retail trading hours in Western Australia within the next few months.

  • A plan to develop "greener" public transport systems for Western Australia was unveiled by the State Government.

  • The West Australian Treasurer sought to soften the impact of almost $1billion in fresh taxes and charges imposed since Labor won office with a tax reform package the Government says will return $70million to business and families over four years.

The preferences of supporters of the Greens (ALP – 62% cf L-NP – 38%) favoured the ALP State Government. Preferences of supporters of One Nation (L-NP – 78.5% cf ALP – 21.5%) and Other Parties and Independent Candidates (L-NP – 55.5% cf ALP – 44.5%) favoured the State Opposition. Preferences of Australian Democrat supporters were evenly divided (ALP - 50% cf L-NP - 50%).

This latest Morgan Poll on Western Australian State Voting Intention was conducted face-to-face among 765 electors throughout Western Australia on the weekends of January and February 2003. Electors were asked: "If a State election were being held today – which Party would receive your first preference?" Of all electors surveyed, 4% (up 0.5%) did not name a party.
